During this year, Swareena learned so many new skills in all the areas and she was capable enough to develop worksheets for academic grade pre-nursery upon the request of the teachers. She could manage photocopying, scanning, printing and handing over the required material to the respective teachers. She could manage basic cooking like preparing tea, coffee, soups, maggie, egg boiling, and omelettes 100% independently. She was responsible for taking care of medicines for her Dadi and now, she is taking care of medicines for her father.

We are preparing her for office assistant, household manager, assistant teacher and an independent girl.

Achievements of Abhay

Abhay came to Learning Ladder at 3 years of age. He was a child with delayed developmental milestones and emotional maladjustment. He was very insecure and used to cry every time parents left him. Parents were very concerned about the child and wanted some guidelines for him.

We conducted a week-long assessment in all the areas of early intervention domains and devised an intervention programme. The intervention programme included the areas of occupational therapy (motor, cognition, and perception), language (receptive and expressive), socialization (one to one and small group), concept learning and pre- academics curriculum.

He was not cooperative and used to mostly cry for two hours every day. We tried to give him confidence and made him feel secure at Learning Ladder. His mother had to sit beside him in all the sessions. We moved her away from the child gradually as he began to complete the tasks. Systematic planning and strategic implementation of individualized education programme was the key to success. Our hard work gradually showed positive results and we were able to remove his mother’s presence completely from Learning Ladder. One year down the line child was ready to go for pre-schooling in a normal school. He coped well in a normal school.

Achievements of Karn A.

Karn A. is a child with cerebral palsy having significant limitations and mobility issues. He came to Learning Ladder 8 years back with the problems – poor academic progress, behavioral issues, poor learning and motivation. Poor motor coordination skills increased the challenges in learning and mobility. We encouraged him to walk on sticks and coordinate the sticks as per the space availability in the centre.

We started the intervention with the smaller skills like writing his name, and keep building it to a level of small stories, reading, comprehension and writing answers in words or phrases. We also taught him money concept, sight word reading of different shopping materials, price tag reading and checking for expiry dates. He also learned typing on MS office word, making bills on MS excel and calculation of the amount even after discounts.

After discussion with his parents, we trained him for a smaller outlet of snacks and beverages. We trained him in a simulated environment for money transactions and balance money concepts. We also trained him to prepare the bills and collecting the desired amount and delivering the things to the concerned person. we are happy to share that Karn has opened a smaller outlet of snacks and beverage and managing most of the things independently.

Achievements of Raghav

Raghav was 8 years old and studying in class 3 when he came to Learning Ladder with major problem in Hindi and English comprehension and writing as well. We conducted an assessment of grade-2 where he merely achieved passing scores in both the subjects and committed spelling errors and grammatical errors. He was very low in confidence and Hindi was the most challenging subject for him.

Our assessment revealed that he is not aware of matraas, confusion in alphabet sounds and was unable to read or write paragraphs chapter of his books. We started intervention with systematic eradications of deficiencies and boosting his confidence through verbal comprehension and evaluating his content without evaluating spelling/matraas errors.

Our intervention helped the child to perform better in the class and got appreciation from teachers. He managed to score 10/10 in his Hindi unit test and 8/10 in English unit test. His parents were happy with the progress of child and thank Learning Ladder team for helping him to accommodate him in the class.

Sarthak is a child with intellectual impairment and came to Learning Ladder in 2013 with many challenges faced by his parents. He had attended a regular school till class 8th but was unable to do any curricular or extracurricular work independently. He had undergone major surgery for the treatment of epilepsy.

We started working with him on his confidence building, functional academics, language skills, money concepts and other related areas. In due course of time, Sarthak has shown significant improvement in all areas. His confidence was boosted and he started working independently. He was very much focused on his functional academics and money concepts. His language and communication skills were significantly improved. As he turned 18, we discussed about his vocational training with the parents. His parents own a small shop in front of BSES office. We suggested that we can train him for photocopy, scanning and printing work. His parents agreed and we started the training in all direct job related and associated areas.

Our hard work, parent’s contribution and child’s dedication paid off. We placed him in his shop and he is now performing all the activities independently. He did face a few challenges initially, but we were able to address them during his sessions by creating a simulated environment. Now, he is independent in all his job-related skills and going to his shop regularly.
